Then We Will Be Free

Then We Will Be Free

Dreams have turned to black
There is nothing to wish for
Nothing left to dream of
No future and no past
Just an instant that passes unnoticed
All because someone owns your ideas
There is no light when your mind is not allowed to work
Not allowed to have thoughts of its own
A dream may offend the few
Thoughts are dangerous if brought to light
Destructive if they are openly shared
Keep your mouth shut
Say only what everyone else says
It is the only way to be safe
To stay out of governmental censorship
Just given the ability to listen to leaders
They own our dreams and wishes
Keeping them safe behind closed doors
After all they are always right
We are not intelligent enough to think
Just wait for someone to find the light
The keys to the locked doors
Then we will dream, wish and think
And then we will be free

View From The Balcony

View From The Balcony

Looking down from a balcony
Watching the people scurry down below
Rushing in and out of buildings
Walking with someplace special to be
Other dart back and forth with nowhere to go
Lovers hold hands as they walk
Some are all alone in their own world
Motorcycles dart between stalled cars
Skateboarders jump on and off curbs
Strangers never meet
They never take the time for a simple hello
No one looks up or down
Their only world is on the street
Such in the loss of the Human race

When My Legs Worked

When My Legs Worked

I used to do so much
Climbing rock faces
Hiking for mile after mile
Touring such beautiful places
Now, I just sit and watch
People walking the Piazza Del Campo
Finding lost treasure in mountain caves
Getting to see what they have only imagined
My heart breaks as I see them having fun
The stories they tell cut deep into my soul
Yet, I have to live through them
My legs have long ago given up on me
Even with buses, trains and subways
They tell me what I can no longer do
Things I cannot see
I will stay at home and watch them
But, I will remember the long away past
The life I had back when my legs worked
That, no one or nothing can be taken away
And, I always have the TV

Without Knowing

Without Knowing

Walking the streets
The sun shining bright
Hearing the screams of the condemned
Locked In towers of steel
Hiding behind walls of glass
They watch me walk by
Dreaming of freedom
Their thoughts are controlled
Creativity has been taken and destroyed
They have to think what their keepers tell them
Money is an all-powerful god
Life is made for endless toil at their command
Initiative is crushed before it takes root
Individual thoughts are forbidden
Walking by I feel pity for the ones I see
They will never know the beauty of a flower
The wonder of a newborn baby kitten
They only know the walls of their prison
And the thoughts of their warden
With no hope of ever learning better
They serve their lives away
Without ever knowing

86B West York Street

86B West York Street

A small one bedroom apartment
White walls and a textured ceiling
A crappy painting hangs on the wall
Handmade airplanes hanging as if in flight
86B West York St. wasn't much
Cheap rent and no luxuries
Yet, to my eyes, it was beautiful
There was a little girl who lived next door
Waving every morning as she passed
She was all smiles and happiness
Looking through the window every day
She brought the light into the room
That apartment sits empty now
That little girl has long since grown up
Those rooms are no longer as beautiful as they were
Its life has been drained away
Luckily, the memories are still there
