Beating Heart

Holding it in my open hand

Showing you my pain

Look at my heart

Watch it beat

Time after time

In a perfect rhythm

Does it only have one beat left?

Does it have a million to go?

Look at my beating heart

It has seen so much

Lived through unimaginable pain

Count the scars

Look how deep they are

How they never healed

Brush away the ashes

Look at the burns that have been left

Scorched by dreams that went unfulfilled

Look at my heart

Whether it beats just once

Or if it beats a million times

It doesn’t matter

At least it lived for a little while

Clouds stretch across the horizon

Endless rains fall

Even during the brief moments of sun

Heaven’s tears still drop from the sky

The spirit cannot live in such a world

Living in only darkness and storms

Smiles last only as long as the light

They disappear as quickly as the clouds close

Someday the rains may stop

The clouds may part once again

And the sun may shine

That is the day the smiles will return

I never believed in gravestones

A stone left to show your passing

Just a name and some dates

Left standing alone for all time

A place for people to come and cry

They tell you how much they miss you

But that fades and you are left all alone

Yet, a gravestone does not tell who you were

How you lived or who you loved

It merely says that you were there

Billions of stars floating in paradise

Eternal flames burning in a black sky

Mere specks of distant lights

They are so much more

The eyes of gods and goddess past

Lights of worship and wonder

The places where wishes come true

Then think for a moment

What would the whole universe be like without you?

It just would not be the same

Storm clouds over distant hills

Flashes of light as lightning strikes the Earth

Blue skies above give hope

Gentle breezes cover the sound of thunder

You know the rain will come

Be sure the winds will blow

The rain has to come

The wind has to come

For now enjoy the momentary sun

Just know that it is a gift from the gods

To be lived and loved
