Left All Alone
By R.e. Taylor
Born in the twenties
He grew proud and strong
A star in football and track
He was a very popular boy
Leaving home right after school
He fought the Germans and Japanese
Wounded a few times
He came home a hero
Married his high school sweetheart
Three kids and five grandkids later
He lost his one true love
His fingers began to go first
Then he lost his hips and knees
He began to not hear so well
And he couldn’t read the funniest anymore
Then his mind began to fade away
So, now he sits in his chair everyday
Staring out into a world he cannot enjoy
He can remember in his lucid moments
The live he had so long ago
Now, he can only talk enough to ask one thing
“Did anyone come to see me today?”
The answer is always no
No one ever comes to see the old man
They have forgotten him and his life
So, he will sit alone for the rest of his life
Sometimes he prays in his clearer moments
He asks that he will be gone soon
Hopefully, he will get his wish
And he will be that young man again
Finding the love of his life
When they meet in Heaven
