Rules Don’t Apply

Rules Don’t Apply
by Lord R.e. Taylor

He has been on the road since he was born
It doesn’t matter where it is or what it is made of
Concrete, brick, cobblestone, or red mud
All he wants is a bottle of Jack and four wheels
He was never the kind for a licence
And speed limits are just suggestions
The cops know him, and they like catching him
He just makes an endless game out of it
He is not the kind who likes to lose
After all, the roads were made for him
And he makes the rules

Forest Cathedral

Forest Cathedral
by Lord R.e. Taylor

For a few days out of the year
Forests are no longer simple forests
They turn into a massive cathedral
With pillars reaching up to Heaven
Ceilings made of the purest gold
With just enough light showing through
To make even the air look like it was on fire
Choirs of birds and animals raise their voices
Singing hymns, man could never write
The aisle leading up to the altar
It has its own music, spirit, and soul
A babbling brook with gentle waterfalls
The perfect music behind the hymns of the forest
Hopefully, man will never be able to enter that church
This cathedral could never survive
Maybe it would become a high-rise hotel
Or perhaps a simple parking lot
And Nature’s beauty would be gone forever

Looking For Her Future

Looking For Her Future
by Lord R.e. Taylor

She stands on the edge
Her normality behind her
The foggy mists of her future ahead
They will not allow her to see what is coming
Still, she stands alone and looks
Hoping to get a single glimpse of what is coming

Weekend Days

Weekend Days
By Lord R.e. Taylor

Weekends were always special
Leave the city life behind
Just hop in the car and take a ride
Small towns were soon magical
The Little family-owned restaurants
Stores that sold lottery tickets and alcohol
Antique shops always had the right stuff
And hundreds of yard sales lined the roads
The people were the friendliest
Never having a bad thing to say
It was always the best days ever
And still the best memories ever

Children Of The Static

Children Of The Static
by Lord R.e. Taylor

Even 60 years ago
The world was different
We were different, too
We had our black & white TVs
We were loyal to our three channels
That was mainly all we had
Every night, sometime around midnight
Every station would shut down
And we would get our static
Kids would spend hours looking at it
Waiting to see a face or hear a voice
Maybe it would come from the grave
It might be coming from outer space
We never knew, and it didn’t matter
It was forbidden for us to be doing it
Way too far past our bedtimes
But all that did was add to the fun
We never found out who they were
Or what they said to us
The fact that we saw then was enough
Now I look and cannot find any static
Dawn, I miss being a kid

Heaven’s Playground

Heaven’s Playground
by Lord R.e. Taylor

It is the worst thing when a child dies
Years of agony and tears
A feeling of emptiness
And the disappearance of hope
You know that your child misses you
They see you in their dreams
And you see them in yours
But for every child who leaves us
They have a special place given by God
A Heaven where children are happy
With newly made friends around them
You know they are running around
Smiling, laughing, and playing
As they wait for their mommy and daddy
And when that day comes
Everything will again be perfect
Just the way it was before

I Miss My White Christmas

I Miss My White Christmas
By Lord R.e. Taylor

When I was a kid, I didn’t know what I had
Waking up on Christmas morning
Not looking for presents until later
I looked out of the front door
Always hoping for a covering of virgin snow
As an adult, I made the mistake of moving
Settling down in the southern tropics
Now Christmas is met with palm trees
And the annoying sounds of lorikeets
I would give everything I have or will have
To see one more white Christmas
Just like the ones that I left behind

Writer

Writer
by Lord R.e. Taylor

She sits alone every night
Just her and her pen and paper
Writing tens of thousands of words
Creating characters  from nothing
She writes stories of strange lands
Love, which had to happen somewhere
And tales of magic and miracles
Yes, she does get to know her characters
They become her friends
She does cry when one of them is hurt
She celebrates when they are happy
And she is there through their entire  lives
No, she is not just a writer by any means
She is the creator of her worlds
And she is a goddess to her people

My Heart Is Yours

My Heart Is Yours
by Lord R.e. Taylor

I remember your voice
The smile that you have
The way I feel when I see you
Every moment is so rare
Given to us by the Fates
I wish it could be so much more
Moments, hours, or a lifetime longer
Just to spend it all with you
It may never happen, but I still pray
And my feelings go unspoken
But please know that my heart is yours
Just as the Fates hoped that it would be

Final Heartbeats

Final Heartbeats
by Lord R.e. Taylor

I feel my heartbeat
I have never felt it before
But it is ever so weak
It won't last me much longer
I am sure of that
But I do not care
It allowed me to find you
Gave me the chance to love you
And it allowed you to walk away
So, without you in my life
I no longer need to know it is there
So, in the few beats that I have left
Please let me remember you
Just the way you were when we loved
And not the door closing behind you
Even in death, I could not bear that again

Drought

Drought
by Lord R.e. Taylor

Month after month
Sometimes for years
The clouds never come
The air just dries everything
The grasses and trees turn brown
Animals die in the fields
And families pray for a touch of rain
No matter how many people pray
Or how much they sacrifice
Only dust fills their lives
When rain finally does come
Even if it is for just a single day
It is a life-renewing celebration
A sign that God does hear prayers
And that He does care for His children

Stairs To Home

Stairs To Home
by Lord R.e. Taylor

I cannot wait to walk up those steps
After I am finally laid to rest
I want to see all the other spirits
Talk with them and maybe share stories
I lived with knowledge of them
Having seen or heard my share
No, I am not scared of them
Why should I be
They are no different from me
I feel I will be safe with them
So let me peacefully go up those steps
I promise that I will never bother you again
Why would I
For the first time, I will be happy and at home

A Midnight Life

A Midnight Life
by Lord R.e. Taylor

Yes, sleeping all night may be fun
You can binge on TV all night, too
But there is a whole world out there
Offering a million new experiences
And a mess of interesting people
Basically, brimming with life
Life that you have never seen
Life you probably didn’t know existed
But now you are a full-grown adult
Hopefully, with no bedtime anymore
So, just one night go out and open up
See if you can enjoy just one thing
It may just change your life
And maybe make you a little happier

Too Many Changes

Too Many Changes
by Lord R.e. Taylor

The world has changed
Values of the past are gone
Communists are rising
Nazis are making a comeback
It is not anyone's fault
But it may be everyone’s fault
Nobody really planned for it
One day, everything was fine
The next thing was all wrong
Maybe it was just the right time
Or you could say the wrong time
There is no idea how long it will last
Or how long we will last
If we last

A Magical Place

A Magical Place
by Lord R.e. Taylor

A magical place
A couple of inches tall
Sheltered by nature
They live in peace
A mother, father, and their kids
Sharing their lives with woodland creatures
They help make the world a good place
Full of love and hope for all
The magical creatures who live in that house
Well, you may not believe in them
But they believe in you
They love you and always wish you well
So, if you see a brightly colored mushroom
Make sure you do not pick it
You may be taking a family of fairies with it
And that would not be good for anyone

Our Own Hell

Our Own Hell
by Lord R.e. Taylor

The Sun burns down
Turning the day into a hell
Tarmac burns and bubbles
Sticking to children’s feet
Sunscreen will not work
Your body turns red in minutes
Clothes hurt way too much
And sleeping is almost impossible
All you can do is pray for cold air
Or you could pray for a quick death
Either way would be a blessing
Chill please. I was just kidding
But, think about this for a second
At least you wouldn't hurt anymore

Mother Goose

Mother Goose
by Lord R.e. Taylor

Mother Goose takes a walk
Leaving all her little ones at home
Sometimes she just needs a break
But do not worry too much
The kids know how to honk
They are louder than an A-bomb
So, Mother Goose will run home
Taking care of her babies
Just before she leaves again
And her gander gets stuck
Cursing and crying
He binge-watches Netflix
Hating his life choices
Praying that the kids do not wake up
At least until their mom gets home

The Winter Moon

The Winter Moon
by Lord R.e. Taylor

The full moon on a winter's eve
Casts a strange light across the horizon
It creates dark shadows all around
Giving the night an evil glow
Maybe it is safe to travel alone
But that could be your worst mistake
The light that you see is not common
It only arrives when the Earth is just right
It is not known why it comes or who sends it
But you will hear screams of pain and terror
And you may see stains in the snow
Sadly, you will not see the people who went out
They may be dead, or they may just be missing
A few of us know the truth, but we will never say
That would take all of the fun away
And we sure would not want that
Would we?

The Speed Of Time

The Speed Of Time
By Lord R.e. Taylor

I do not know who invented time
They didn’t make it right
It passes so fast that we can’t see it
One minute, we are playing on a monkey bar
Next, we must use a walker to move
Yeah, we can look and try to remember
Sometimes even that fails us
I know that we all complain about it
But nothing is ever going to fix it
So what if every year feels like an hour
We just have to accept what they decided
Just remember that time is truly fleeting
So in the next “hours” left, live a whole life
And do not worry, you didn’t make the rules
You just have to live by them
